"It is infinitely more useful for a child to hear a story told by a person than by computer. Because the greatest part of the learning experience lies not in the particular words of the story but in the involvement with the individual reading it".
- Frank Smith
I agree 100%! So many things are missed when listening to a computer "read" a book: facial expressions, interactions between reader & listener, etc. I love reading books to my students because we feed off of each other. The computer can't tell when they are losing interest/focus and it can't pull them back in. There are all sorts of reading strategies a reader can use to keep students involved the entire time, no matter what the book is.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this! I think it is important to have that interaction with the children and see their involvement with the stories. So many times the children can make real life/world connections with the stories and then it can get really interesting. I love to hear some of the stories they come up with after and during storytimes! If they are listening to a story on a computer it does not allow that "special way" that an individual may read it.
ReplyDeleteI love this quote. Nothing can replace face to face contact. It's sad because our society has replaced one on one interaction with social networking, text messaging and talking over the phone or through IM. Although it is convenient for us to turn on a TV or internet video, children learn by how we teach them.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard this quote before but it is so true. It is more enjoyable to have human interaction. Technology has become a babysitter and an educator but interaction with an individual sparks the exchange of ideas and information that can go two ways instead of just one.
